Getting Around Knoxville
Knoxville sits where I-40 and I-75 meet, which makes it well connected and occasionally chaotic — the interchange carries a great deal of through traffic that has no interest in the city at all. Downtown itself is small and easy, arranged around Market Square and the university campus just west of it. The distances that matter here are the ones leaving town. McGhee Tyson is south toward Alcoa. The Smokies are east through Sevierville. Neither is far, but both are single-corridor routes that congest predictably at the wrong moments — the airport road in the morning, the Sevierville road on a Friday afternoon in October.
Game Days at Neyland
A Tennessee home game puts more people into Knoxville than live in most cities in the state, and the ordinary rules stop applying. Roads close, parking sells out well in advance, and the period immediately after the final whistle is the worst possible time to be looking for a ride. We plan game days backwards from the exit rather than forwards from the arrival. Drop-off happens at a point you can actually walk from, and pickup is at an agreed location away from the immediate crush, at a time set after the game rather than during it. For groups travelling together the Sprinter is usually the right answer, because reassembling twelve people across three vehicles in that crowd is not realistic.
Runs to the Smoky Mountains
A large share of Knoxville bookings are not really Knoxville trips at all. They are arrivals at TYS followed by an hour east to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, usually with a week's luggage and often with a group that has flown in from several places. That run rewards the right vehicle more than almost any other trip we take. A family of six with a week of bags does not fit comfortably in a standard SUV, and splitting a group across two rentals at the airport is how a holiday starts badly. One vehicle, one chauffeur, and the mountain roads handled by someone who drives them — which matters most on the return leg, in the dark, at the end of a week.
